Drone photography changing the face of real estate

Technology is changing every aspect of our life so it’s little wonder it’s also changing the way we look at real estate.

Agents and vendors are turning to emerging technology in video, 3D-imagery and drone photography to show prospective buyers properties from a whole different angle.

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are increasingly being used to provide a better overview not just of the property, but also of the surrounding area.

Ryan Hamlet, General Manager of Swarm UAV – who shoot real estate video in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney – says drone photography can really help boost a property’s profile.

“Telling the story of your home, really communicating the key points is vital to selling your property well. With aerial photography you can instantly demonstrate the size of the block and where the home sits on the property,” he says.

“The drone aerials allow you to paint a wider picture, providing buyers with a perspective of where the property is located within the neighbourhood, proximity to parks, public transport, shops and schools.”

A booming real estate niche

Hamlet works with estate agents across Australia and says demand for drone videos is increasing.

He says when he started out, the company was among the first in Australia licensed to fly. There are now more than 200 companies working with drones.

“The UAV industry has grown at a tremendous pace over the last two years,” Hamlet says.

“We were one of the first thirty businesses to have a license to fly commercially in Australia, there are now over two hundred and thirty licensed business.”

Hamlet says they regularly shoot videos up Australia’s east coast and predicts huge growth in the industry in the coming years.

“We have carried out over 200 real estate jobs in the last 12 months and with our Sydney and Brisbane teams set for real growth that number could easily triple over the next year”

“Drone photography is great for many property shapes and sizes, and we have also produced aerials for apartment towers, town houses, and farms.

“When considering aerial photography you need to keep in mind any visual obstructions from trees or power-lines that could prevent clear visuals.”
